Geminoids the almost-human robots

A geminoid robot is a robot that is made specifically to mimic the appearance of a human being, the goal of course is to make a robot that is so similar to a real person that you couldn't tell them apart.

There are a few impressing geminoids out there, the latest being the Geminoid DK, in fact if you were to look at a still picture of him you probably wouldn't see it was just a machine in a human costume. That is, if it wasn't a close up.

So far though, all doubts wether they are real persons or not are dismissed as soon as they start to move.

Famous Geminoid robots

Geminoid HI-1

The first one is the Geminoid HI-1, created by a japanese scientist called Hiroshi Ishiguro.

As you can see the movement is a bit jerky which gives it a slightly creepy look.
Read an interview with the creator here.

Geminoid DK

This one is the latest to attract attention world wide. Created in Denmark to look like Henrik Scharfe at the Aalborg university.

As with his japanese cousin, when he starts to move he looks a bit disturbing.

Geminoid F

This one is also developed by Hiroshi Ishiguro. This time made to look like a female.

A lot better than the other two, but still a long way to go.

Conclusion

At first glance the topic of creating geminoid robots seems like a waste of time, but it could end up help us understand what we regard as "human" and what is required for us to engage in social situations.

Meet Curiosity the new Mars rover

The two shuttles Discovery and Endeavour are being retired, does that mean that space exploration will stagnate?
- Nope. Nasa is performing some rigorous testing of the new Mars rover Curiosity, or MSL as it is called. The new rover, as the name suggests, will be able to gather and analyze more information as it weighs four times more and is about twice as big as the previous two rovers Spirit and Opportunity which landed on the surface of Mars back in 2004.

 Robonaut 2 unpacked and unplugged

Itís easy being a bit torn as what to make of this robot, is it really useful and what is its true purpose? Robonaut was boxed and launched together with the last mission for the Discovery space shuttle, once at place it had quite a wait in its little box.

Nasa to launch Anti Matter Detector in April

The space shuttle Endeavour is scheduled for its last mission, and itís cargo will hold an entirely new piece of measuring instrument called Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS). One of the more exciting aspects of the AMS is that its purpose is not to search for things we already know about, but to locate and analyze phenomena which we have not yet imagined or discovered.
