Smart Syncing between your desktop and box.net, dropbox and other cloud storage services

Recently I came across a good deal for an online storage service and thought it would be a good idea to sync photos and videos to it so I wouldn't be dependent on a single physical computer.

Box.Net Syncs with the "My Box Files" folder

This article assumes you have some knowledge of what a command prompt is and how to use some of the basic features of it.

According to the Box.Net description, all I had to do was to drag and drop files or folders that I wanted to sync into their designated "My Box Files" folder that was created during installation of their Desktop Sync software.

All good here. Except for a couple of minor details. If I just drag and drop, all my photos will actually be moved, that is removed from their original location on my hard drive!

- I don't want that! I want to keep them under the windows designated special "My Pictures" folder!

Well, what if I just copy the photo folder then?

- Nope. That would make me have a duplicate for every little photo on my hard drive, and it would also force me to copy all new photos to the "My Box Files" folder. I don't want that.

Having box.net sync with an already existing folder without copying or moving files

It's really easy, just open up a command prompt (cmd.exe) with administrator priviliges. Navigate your way to the My Box Files folder location.

The folder locations on your computer may be different, but you should know how to figure out the correct locations.
Box.net Will soon sync what I want!

The Magic!

Creating a folder link Basically what the above command does is that it creates a link to the target folder. For all installed software and all users it will appear as a copy of the "Pictures" folder. But it's not really a folder, it just points to another existing folder.

Box.Net gladly syncs my photos

The result is that whenever I transfer new photos to my hard drive, Box.net sync will pick up the new file through the link I created and transfer it to the online storage.

Just what I wanted.

 InstallerExplorer shows hidden installed products

InstallerExplorer is a small lightning fast utility that allows you to list, view detailed information and uninstall software installed on your machine without your knowledge. Some products mark themselves as “System Components” to hide from windows internal list in add/remove programs. This application also allows you to see where in the registry the product was found, and where the product is installed. Many users are not aware that windows installer packages at the moment of installation are cached in a windows folder using a rather cryptic filename, this utility takes care of those also.
